"I have to wear a veil"
Call it the perils of marriage to a professional footballer. They very rarely stay in one place for longer than three years, and perhaps end up in cities that hardly boast outstanding natural beauty; the boss of Middlesbrough in England’s industrial north, for instance, insisted any transfers were confirmed before they saw the town.
But Oksana Andersson, the wife of Sweden’s Christian Wilhemsson, has more reasons than most to bemoan her husband’s career, though. Her man has just been signed for $18 million by al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia. Oksana is a lingerie model. Ironically, he was signed from a club in France, where the full abaya is actually illegal.
“A lot of people don’t think I’ll manage,” she told Swedish reporters. “I just have to stay positive. Of course it will be tough, knowing that you’re not allowed to do whatever you want, but you have to make the best of it.”
They will live in a European compound, but she is already buying up flowing robes for the outside. “We’ve spoken to people who’ve lived there, and there is a lot of adjustment to put up with. It will be different. But I have decided not to have any prejudice so I will accept their traditions and make the best out of it,” she adds.
The good news, if you can call it that, is that she will be able to see her man in action in the King Fahd Stadium. The ban on women in sports stadia has been suspended for her after pressure from the Swedish Embassy in the Kingdom. “It would be good for everyone,” said Jan Thesleff. Well, Saudi football fans aren’t arguing.
