Denim Rules
Denim is the ultimate fashion staple in any man’s wardrobe and it is imperative that you choose – and use – your pair wisely. Get it right, and you’ll be swaggering around with Clint Eastwood-style confidence. Get it wrong, and you may end up with teenage girls singing “Living on a Prayer” as you walk past. We’ve put together a few rules that will have you in the former group rather than the latter. Unless you want to find yourself in the latter... but let’s leave that chilling possibility to one side for a moment. We like to have faith in our readers...
Rule1: Keep it Simple
The safest way to go is with a classic fit and colour.
There’s no need to go too high end; just make sure they’re well made.
Rule2: No Leg Fit
Check if the pants narrow, making a tight ring around your ankle.
These are called tapered jeans, and are evil. Avoid.
Rule3: Buy Your Size
You should be able to fit a couple of fingers between your waist and jeans.
If you can’t, choose again. If you can fit in your fist, you’re a rapper.
Rule4: Less Is More
Avoid any zippers, extra pockets, and other nonsense designs that give less value to your jeans –
and give you the wrong kind of attention.
Rule5: Colour
Darker colours will serve you better than acid or stonewashed, as they work just as well with most shirts,
and don’t give off that 80s death metal look.
Rule6: Draft-Free Ankles
Make sure the cuff reaches the top of your shoes.
High waters are not flattering, unless you like to suggest you’re related to Michael Jackson.
Rule7: Tone It Down
Venture into the world of coloured jeans only if you’re ultra-fashionable.
Otherwise, you’re better off not risking your reputation.
Rule8: Avoid Distress
Never invest in any jeans that have rips, holes or those long, ragged threads hanging from them.
They were big only
in the 90s, son.
