LG SL80 vs Samsung 8500
Body Type
[LG SL80] Measures 1.8 inches in depth, a huge change in body type from its boxy TV predecessors.
[Samsung 8500] At 1.2 inches, this is a miracle from the dieting industry. Buy this girl some skinny jeans. [Winner]
A pretty face
[LG SL80] The LG might have a little junk in its trunk but it's no butter face. This chic design is turning heads and forging new frontiers with its edge to edge display and virtually invisible bezel giving you nothing but image. [Winner]
[Samsung 8500] Featuring a trendy little stand with a blue light and the interesting Touch of Color bezel that can make this big boy toy work into your wife's interior design scheme. The red variation is definitely a looker.
Well connected
[LG SL 80] You'll be connected to Yahoo and all the exciting little widgets there in to check the weather or count down to Eid al Fitr right there on the TV.
[Samsung 8500] Boasts the same Yahoo connectivity and widgeting fun provided by the LG, but also comes with 2 USB ports. [Winner]
Stands out
[The LG SL80] This isn't really going to be your yellow tulip in a red field with contrast at 150,000:1 ratio – but it just can't even come close to the Samsung 8500.
[Samsung 8500s] Contrast here is an incredible 7,000,000:1 ratio, this is even better than the predicted contrast of future OLED TVs, and beats the LG SL80 over and over and over...46 times. [Winner]
Hz so good
[The LG SL80] Produces 1080p images at a 240 Hz refresh rate, or super-smooth image rendering.
[Samsung 8500] Samsung's Auto Motion Plus provides 240 Hz processing power with Separate Blur technology. [Winner]
Earth goodness
[The LG SL80] The LG meets the v3.0 Energy Star criteria for energy efficiency and includes a mechanical on and off switch to completely eliminate the standby phantom power draw.
[Samsung 8500] The 8500 also meets the v3.0 Energy Star ratings and has an optimised energy savings mode that adjusts the backlight and picture quality without sacrificing the viewing experience. [Winner]
Backlight
[LG SL80] Close but still stuck in the past, since it still uses tradition CCFL back light; it won't be until later this year that its sister the SL90 with be released with an LED back light.
[Samsung 8500] Here you're at the forefront of technological innovation with the LED backlight, which is brighter and more energy-efficient .[Winner]
Fork it over
[LG SL80] A relatively affordable set with the 42" coming in at $1,600, the 47" at $1,900 and the 55" at $2,800. [Winner]
[Samsung 8500] An LCD that demands an arm, leg, and your first born son: The 46" is $3,200 and the 55" is $4,000.
Verdict: The LG SL80 just isn't in the same league as the Samsung 8500 which rests at the brink of the future of the television. Still, if you want to hold off on trading in your first born for the crispy screen, wait until later this year to see how the LG SL90 with LED backlight compares...
