The marketing world has to be really suffering from the current crisis if it thinks putting loafers, boots and canvas shoes on a stack of old books will appeal to the 20-somethings of the world. It’s a good thing, then, that Paul Smith’s Winter 2009 footwear collection is filled with sharp designs that’ll appeal to every stylish man, bibliophile or not.

The collection takes its cues from old English elegance – bear with us – and features rich and earthy hues highlighted with prints, metallic buckles, and even the occasional polka dot. Brogues are dip-dyed in dark, wintery colours, while leather lace-ups are covered with faded patterns or inserted with washed Prince of Wales detailing, for feet that are happy even when it’s blistering cold outside.
