Hanks for the memories
“It’s different and its spacious,” says Marwan Karam, a 26-year-old banker from Beirut, “so it’s unlike the minute pubs in the area.” The bar is Hank’s and the area is Gemayze, which is, as Marwan points out, more noted for drinking dens with little more than three stools and a sofa. “Another interesting thing is the naked women that come out after midnight on the screens, unfortunately not live,” he adds, adding an attraction a little more appealing than mere leg room.
Not that Gemayze really needs another new bar, but the dimly-lit Hank’s, a club-slash-lounge that stands guard at the entrance to the area’s main road, does manage to stands out – even if they did cater for the obligatory table-dancing clientele.
The Italian/Spanish menu is complemented by cocktails, and for the more mature, sophisticated NOX reader (is there any other kind?), we can relax in the knowledge that no one under 24 can get in. So, if you get chatted up by a stunner by the bar, you won’t have to worry about her reappearing in a school uniform when you drop her off at 6am the next morning.
