Invisible hooligan
The legendary Vespa brand scoops award for its latest manifestation, the 300GTS
Issue: Nov, 2009
It might once have seemed like a passport to an early funeral, but zipping around the increasingly log-jammed streets of Amman on an uber-hip scooter is beginning to make more and more sense. Why sit on Medina Munowarra street for two hours every morning when you can slide right between even the most grotesque SUVs?
Okay, so Jordan might not exactly be rivalling Genoa for scooter chic, but changes are coming to a kerb near you. Leading the way are Darwazeh Motors the city’s exclusive stockists of all things Vespa, the classic scooter brand admired by three generations of urban fashionistas, and whose dealership is neatly situated opposite King Abdullah Gardens. And for lovers of anything terminally hip, the classically-styled Vespa GTS – think French movies or over-zealous Oasis fans – has just won runner-up in the Scooter of the Year for 2009 from leading website Motorcycle.com. The editors described it as “an invisible hooligan” – a line we just stole.
And it’s not really a surprise. The Vespa GTS, perhaps the coolest two wheels out there, will race away from any traffic light faster than a Maserati and will offer a Prius-like 70mpg to ensure you can afford the espressos in
the street-side café when you park it.
