My job my kit
Who said being a gadget freak makes you a geek? DJs have – unquestionably – one of the coolest jobs in the world, and they have to use numerous high tech gadgets to put on a show and ensure we, the people, party hard. We interviewed one of our local talents, DJ Nugbi, whose expertise lies in tech-house and progressive, and asked him to give us an insight about some of the gadgets used to create mixes with the best effects and sound quality.
Dell XPS 1330
“Good for running software such as Abelton Live, Sony Sound Forge and Acid Pro Nuendo. Although I wish I could get a Macbook Pro – looks so much better – but my Dell does the job pretty well.”
Gemini XL300 DIRECT DRIVE
“Although they are old, these turntables are equipped with a good motor and very excellent sound; they are the best choice for beginner DJs because they’re cheap, reliable and long lasting. I recently changed the stylus to give me better sound, and I am thinking of buying the Technics SL1210mk5 turntables since these are getting a little bit overused!”
Sony MDR V700
“I’ve had these for ages, and they still have amazing sound quality. I love them for their very long chord, flexibility and style. I’ve also got a pair of Pioneer HDJ1000 which I think have a better sounding bass kick, but don’t look as good.”
Pioneer DJM800
“It’s found in many clubs all over and, as a DJ, it’s important to have one at home. I think this one is un-freakin-believable...! With its four-channel versatile mixer and three-band equaliser, Pioneer has taken sound quality to the next level; it has many built in jaw-dropping effects.”
FBT PSR215
“These are usually used for professional gigs or big rooms. Still, a couple of these do blast a good party down in the basement. The dream match is getting Genelec Studio monitors for the perfect sound.”
