NOX guide to
Dressing for 2010
Issue: Jan, 2010
The start of a new year means – at least in fashion terms – updating your wardrobe to keep up with the times; and with all of this season’s stock on sale, it’s easy to get lost in the sea of last year’s fads and 15-minute trends. So, the word of the month is “flexibility”, meaning new items that work just as well with what you already have in the closet, and what you may pick up later on. Here’s how to be smart about your 2010 shopping.
The rules:
Everything neutral
Neutral tones are back in after a worrying obsession with bright colours splashed over men’s clothing. Designers have mixed multiple shades of neutral for the new season, making for a simple trend to follow since shirts in earth tones practically go with everything you already own.
Rich fabrics
Wool is an obvious necessity in winter, and wool trousers are an instant classic. Another rich fabric that promises to be a 2010 staple is velvet, but only when used sparingly. The sight of a man in a full velvet suit would make any sane person want to punch themselves repeatedly in the eyeball.
Patent leather
Leather in general never goes out of style, but specific items like the above vest will become less popular come spring. So, unless you’re trying to desperately become the 2010 James Dean, stick to simple lambskin jackets with minimal zippers. If you can find one with a hoodie, that’s a bonus.
Small stuff
Wool knitted hats, snazzy scarves, cool sneakers and off the shoulder bags. These items are as much a part of your look as your everyday life, so invest in key pieces that will fit your lifestyle. Just one bit of advice: avoid anything with a massive logo that turns you into a corporate banner.
Grown up plaid
Wearing plaid doesn’t have to turn you into a geek, grunger or woodcutter – if you know what to look for. Pick shirts that feature light cotton, slim sleeves, button collar and not too bright colours for an adult look that works as well for a night out with the boys as for a family luncheon.
