Posh Arab wine we’re used to – Mount Nebo and all that – and Arak has been a part of the Middle East since Phoenician times. But Arab vodka? That’s a tough concept. Still, Samer Goussous of Eagle Distilleries thought he’d do his best to explain the logic behind Vega, the company’s new vodka label. If there are free samples, we’re definitely willing to listen.

NOX: What was the inspiration behind this production? How did it all come together?
Samer Goussous: The Middle East has been lacking a homegrown vodka to be proud of, so we at Eagle Distilleries focused on making the best vodka in the Middle East.

NOX: How will it compare to Russian brands?
SG: We’ve designed Vega to match any classic Russian vodka – and hopefully surpass many of them in quality and taste. It goes through multiple distillations and filtering processes to give it smoothness and character.

NOX: What do Russians think of it?
SG: Honestly, we have not asked any Russians for their opinion, but we were very highly recommended by the many foreign communities in Jordan, one of which is the Polish community, who are not shy about their love of the spirit.

NOX: Is it all locally produced?
SG: Vega Vodka is made up of a combination of Jordanian grain and wheat, triple distilled and filtered. We are currently targeting the Jordanian market and the wider Middle East. Soon, we hope to take this to the world market as the finest vodka a desert has yet produced!

NOX: Where did you learn how to make it?
SG: Vega is the culmination of decades of experience – and a lot of vodka drinking! Vega vodka was made to meet our tastes. We are the number one consumers of the product, and it is exactly what the doctor ordered…

NOX: How is it best drunk?
SG: Put a bottle of Vega in your freezer for a few hours and then prepare to indulge in the pleasure of its crisp, clean, and smooth taste. And when the bottle is frozen, the package
looks even more out of this world!

NOX: How does it differ from other brands?
SG: That can simply be answered by making
a blind test and letting the drinkers tell you.
