Party like it's 1949
The big, baggy pleated trouser is back, as is the heavy-duty military look
Issue: Oct, 2009
So, it’s looking like the late 1940s again. Or maybe 1981 and an attack of Spandau Ballet in the high street. If Lanvin’s Autumn/Winter look is any guide, the high-waisted, multi-pleated trousers are back – and are a clear recession buster. Why buy skinny fit jeans and their lack of material when acres of cotton are required for a simple suit?
Luxurious, personalised and highly detailed fabrics are the hallmarks of the season, with a palette of colours that is nicely sombre too. Blacks, neutrals and dark colours set the tone, with strong stitching, heavy zips, oversized buttons and rough edges creating the sense of layering. As a result, the look is also more than a touch militaristic – no doubt influenced by the austere times we’re living in. Anyway, it’s warm, comfortable and might make you wish you lived in a colder climate.
